Garment workers clashed with police in Ashulia, Savar, on Monday as law enforcers fired tear gas shells and sound grenades to disperse protesters demanding higher wages and other benefits.
The clashes broke out after 10:00am in the Narsinghpur and Nishchintapur areas along the Abdullahpur-Baipail road, triggering tension across the industrial zone.
Workers initially gathered in front of factories before moving to other industrial units and attempting to bring out workers to join the demonstrations.
They also tried to block roads, prompting confrontations with police.
Police fired several rounds of tear gas shells and sound grenades to bring the situation under control as workers and law enforcers engaged in repeated chases and counter-chases.
Most garment factories in the affected areas declared a general holiday amid the unrest. Additional police personnel were deployed to maintain law and order.
The workers have been demanding a minimum monthly wage of Tk 30,000, an end to alleged blacklisting of workers and the reinstatement of dismissed employees.
The unrest also disrupted traffic on nearby highways, while tensions continued in several parts of the Ashulia industrial belt.
