Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has found no specific intelligence indicating any sabotage plans centring on the July Mass Uprising Day on August 5, although the capital remains under heightened security, a senior police official said on Tuesday.
Speaking at a press briefing at the DMP Media Centre, Additional Commissioner (Detective Branch) Mohammad Shafiqul Islam said police had taken all necessary security measures to ensure the safety of programmes scheduled across the city.
“So far, we have not received any specific information about sabotage targeting August 5. However, considering the significance of the day, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police has adopted comprehensive security measures,” he said.
He added that adequate security arrangements had been put in place at all venues where commemorative programmes are scheduled.
Responding to a question about recent clashes involving political parties in the capital, the DB chief said differences of opinion among political groups could sometimes lead to confrontations but cautioned against equating such incidents with organised sabotage.
“Political parties may have differing views, and clashes can occur as a result. But such incidents should not automatically be treated as acts of sabotage,” he said.
Referring to the recent recovery of bomb-like objects in different parts of the country, Shafiqul Islam said the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit was conducting investigations, while the Detective Branch was carrying out a parallel inquiry.
He said investigators were examining whether there had been any attempt to create instability, spread public panic or portray Bangladesh as a country linked to militancy.
“We are taking these incidents very seriously and investigating every possible angle,” he said.
Regarding the recent discovery of a suspicious object at a metro rail station, the DB chief said no explosive material had actually been found.
“The object turned out to be a container used for betel leaf and tobacco. However, the incident was exaggerated, creating unnecessary panic among the public,” he said.
Reassuring city residents, Shafiqul Islam said the DMP remained on full alert and was fully prepared to deal with any situation.
“We have adequate preparations in place and are taking all necessary measures to ensure the safety and security of the people of Dhaka,” he added.
