Patuakhali: A daring robbery took place at the home of a Malaysian expatriate named Mahin in Kalapara, Patuakhali. During the incident, the robbers shot his 22-year-old son, Naim, in the leg. They also assaulted family members and fled with 25 tolas of gold jewelry, around Tk 200,000 in cash, and an iPhone.

The incident occurred around 3 a.m. on Friday in West Badurtali village of Tiakhali Union in Kalapara upazila.

Naim, his 18-year-old wife Rezbi, his 40-year-old mother Ruma Begum, and his two-year-old child Tasfir were rescued by locals and taken to Kalapara Hospital. After receiving initial treatment, they were referred to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal for better treatment.

Ruma Begum, wife of the expatriate, said her husband is currently in Malaysia. After having dinner, all the family members went to sleep. Around 2:30 to 3 a.m., a group of five to six robbers cut through the window grille on the southern side of the house and entered. Several other members of the gang were waiting outside.

The robbers tied the family members’ hands and legs and brutally assaulted them. They also allegedly attempted to rape her daughter-in-law. When Naim resisted, the robbers shot him above the knee.

They then held a pistol to the head of his two-year-old son, Tasfir, and looted 25 tolas of gold jewelry, around Tk 200,000 in cash, and an iPhone before fleeing the scene.

Kalapara Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nazrul Islam said, “We visited the scene. Efforts are underway to arrest the perpetrators.”
