Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch (DB) chief Mohammad Shafiqul Islam has said an investigation is underway into threats sent to several foreign embassies, with a suspected group allegedly carrying out the activities to tarnish Bangladesh’s image.
He made the remarks while responding to questions from journalists at the DMP Media Centre on Minto Road in the capital on Sunday (August 23).
“We are trying to identify the group,” Shafiqul Islam said.
He said a specific criminal group was sending threatening emails to several embassies in the diplomatic zone and attempting to extort money through the internet.
“The group uses bKash numbers belonging to ordinary and innocent people to send the emails. The people whose numbers are being used are unaware that their numbers are being used for this purpose,” he said.
According to DB sources, threatening emails have been sent to four foreign embassies, including those of China, Pakistan and Turkey, as well as several government offices.
The DB chief said the incident was not necessarily limited to extortion.
“Our preliminary assessment is that this may also be intended to harass someone or could be linked to personal enmity. Besides, creating panic among foreign ambassadors and embassies and tarnishing the country’s image are believed to be among the group’s objectives,” he said.
