DHAKA: The Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB), a BNP-backed organisation of physicians, has suspended the primary membership of one of its leaders over allegations that he assaulted the director of the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) inside his office.

The suspended leader is Dr Zahid Hasan Ripok, DAB’s assistant secretary for legal affairs. He has been asked to explain his conduct within 48 hours.

DAB Secretary General Dr Zahirul Islam Shakil confirmed the decision to the media on Wednesday.

“We have issued him a show-cause notice. We have already decided to suspend his primary membership and given him 48 hours to explain his conduct,” he said.

Dr Zahirul said only one person had so far been named in connection with the incident. The organisation would investigate whether the individual acted alone or was accompanied by others, he added.

“For now, one person’s involvement has come to the forefront, and action has been taken against him,” the DAB secretary general said.

The action follows allegations that DAB activists assaulted IEDCR Director Professor Kazi Ahmed Zaki after entering his office at around 11am on Wednesday, 28 October.
