An indefinite road blockade in Sajek, Baghaichhari upazila of Rangamati, demanding the removal of armed groups and fulfilment of two other demands, entered its fourth day on Sunday.
The latest phase of the blockade began on October 22. The movement is being jointly organised by the Sajek Public Rights Protection Committee and the Sajek Karbari Association.
Although no pickets were seen at road points in support of the blockade, law enforcement personnel continued patrols at key locations.
Babu Dhan Chakma, convener of the Sajek Public Rights Protection Committee, said the blockade would continue until armed members of the Parbatya Chattagram Jana Samhati Samiti (PCJSS), led by Santu Larma, were removed from the area and the safety of local residents was ensured.
Rangamati Superintendent of Police Muhammad Abdur Rakib said the law and order situation in Sajek remained under the administration’s control.
He added that law enforcement agencies would continue patrols and operations against criminal elements and armed groups to prevent untoward incidents. Additional police and army personnel have been deployed to ensure the safety of residents.
Meanwhile, Sajek, a popular tourist destination, remains closed because of the blockade. The Rangamati district administration announced its indefinite closure from October 22 in a notice.
