President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has urged expatriate Bangladeshis to play a more active role in the country’s development and entrepreneurs living abroad to invest in the the country.
He made the call during a courtesy meeting with a delegation of expatriate Bangladeshis from the United Kingdom at Bangabhaban on Thursday afternoon.
Responding to the president’s call, the delegation expressed interest in investing in Bangladesh.
The delegation was led by prominent UK-based Bangladeshi businessman Kamal Uddin. They congratulated Mirza Fakhrul on his election as president.
During the meeting, the president gratefully recalled the significant contributions made by expatriate Bangladeshis in the UK and other countries through their financial support, labour and expertise to the movements for establishing justice, opposing fascism and restoring democracy in Bangladesh.
“The country and its people will always remember the contributions and role of expatriate Bangladeshis,” he said.
The delegation sought the president’s cooperation in addressing various business and civic issues, including harassment at airports and ensuring voting rights, as well as expanding facilities and services for expatriate Bangladeshis.
The president assured them that the government had already begun working to resolve these issues.
He said the government had introduced the Expatriate Card to ensure comprehensive services and facilities for expatriate Bangladeshis.
The government would continue to give priority to the welfare of expatriates and take further measures to improve their facilities, he added.
“You are representatives of Bangladesh in different countries around the world. You should project a positive image of the country abroad,” the president said.
Describing remittances sent by expatriate Bangladeshis as one of the key driving forces of the country’s economy, Mirza Fakhrul expressed his gratitude to them for their contribution.
The president’s Military Secretary and Press Secretary were also present at the meeting.
