No issue between Bangladesh and India is beyond resolution through dialogue, Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi said on Monday.
He made the remarks while responding to a question from reporters after meeting Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed at the Secretariat on Monday (August 10).
Describing his meeting with the home minister as a “people-to-people” engagement, Trivedi said it was his first meeting with Salahuddin Ahmed, but it did not feel like a first encounter.
He praised the home minister as “very good, humble and grounded.”
Speaking about bilateral relations, Trivedi said differences were inevitable in a democracy.
“If there are no issues, there will be no democracy. Issues will remain. But there is no issue that we cannot solve. I can confidently say there is no issue that we cannot settle by sitting together,” he said.
He said maintaining good relations between Bangladesh and India would be a “win-win situation” for both countries, adding that people on both sides wanted to see strong bilateral ties.
“We do not only share a border, we share dreams,” Trivedi said, stressing that the historical relationship and geographical realities between the two countries could not be changed.
He expressed optimism that bilateral relations would improve further in the coming days.
Asked whether any specific issues were discussed during his meeting with the home minister, Trivedi did not give a direct answer and instead emphasised resolving existing issues between the two countries through dialogue.
The Indian envoy also spoke about the warmth and hospitality he had received from ordinary Bangladeshis during his time in the country.
He said he had received a great deal of respect, love and affection during the two months since his arrival in Bangladesh.
Trivedi also expressed hope that a meeting between the two countries’ prime ministers would produce positive results, saying people in both Bangladesh and India wanted to see better relations between the two countries.
