Prime Minister Tarique Rahman may visit India “at any time”, said Information and Broadcasting Adviser Zahed Ur Rahman on Tuesday.
He made the remarks during a press briefing at the Secretariat on the progress of various government activities.
The adviser said India had invited the Bangladesh prime minister in his capacity as the chair of BIMSTEC, while New Delhi had also extended a separate invitation.
“Prime Minister Tarique Rahman may visit India at any time,” he said.
Speaking about Bangladesh-India relations, Zahed said, “Friends can be changed, but neighbours cannot.”
He also said communication and discussions could take place between the intelligence agencies of the two countries.
According to the adviser, a representative of India’s Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) has arrived in Dhaka and a meeting between the intelligence chiefs of the two countries may take place. He said the RAW chief’s visit to Bangladesh was “not a secret matter”.
Bangladesh-India relations would now be rebuilt on the basis of equality, he said, adding that the relationship would move beyond the way it had been handled over the past 17 years.
He also said Bangladesh would no longer allow any Indian agency or organisation to operate in the country in the manner it did during the tenure of Sheikh Hasina.
“From now on, everything will be done through discussions as an independent, sovereign and self-respecting nation,” the adviser said.
