China has congratulated Bangladesh’s newly elected President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

The Chinese Embassy in Dhaka posted the congratulatory message on its Facebook page within minutes of the election results being announced on Thursday afternoon.

“China attaches great importance to its relations with Bangladesh,” the embassy said, adding that China is ready to work closely with Bangladesh to build a “China-Bangladesh community with a shared future for a new era” through joint efforts, for the benefit of both countries and their peoples.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was elected Bangladesh’s 23rd president on Thursday, securing 255 votes in the parliamentary election.

His rival, Colonel (retd) Oli Ahmed, candidate of the Jamaat-e-Islami-led 11-party alliance, received 88 votes.

Mirza Fakhrul will succeed the country’s 22nd President Mohammed Shahabuddin at Bangabhaban.
