US President Donald Trump spoke by phone with Pakistan’s army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, shortly before Munir’s visit to Tehran, the capital of Iran. The conversation took place last week and focused on the situation in Iran and the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, CNN reported, citing a source familiar with the matter.
Munir arrived in Tehran on Monday and held meetings with Iran’s top leadership. Iran’s state broadcaster IRIB reported that he met with Major General Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of the country’s Supreme National Security Council. During the meeting, Rezaei referred to security arrangements for the Strait of Hormuz and a 14-point memorandum of understanding (MoU) reached through Pakistan’s mediation. He said the United States must change its behavior and take effective steps if peace is to be restored.
Earlier, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf also met with the Pakistani army chief. He alleged that the United States had repeatedly violated its commitments under the 14-point agreement signed in June to halt the conflict in West Asia and facilitate technical negotiations. Such violations, he said, were creating instability in the region and increasing distrust of Washington.
In response, Field Marshal Asim Munir said Pakistan would continue its diplomatic efforts to restore peace and stability in the Middle East.
