Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has called for stronger and sustained international support to ensure the safe, voluntary and dignified repatriation of Rohingya refugees to Myanmar, saying the protracted crisis cannot be resolved without coordinated global action.
He made the appeal during a bilateral meeting with United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Rosemary A. DiCarlo at the UN Headquarters in New York on Tuesday (New York time), according to a Home Ministry press release.
The minister stressed that Bangladesh has continued to shoulder the humanitarian burden of hosting more than a million forcibly displaced Rohingyas and reiterated that the only durable solution lies in their safe and sustainable return to their homeland in Myanmar. “Resolving the Rohingya crisis requires sustained and coordinated support from the international community to facilitate the refugees’ safe return to Myanmar,” he said.
During the meeting, Salahuddin Ahmed also highlighted Bangladesh’s priorities in global peacekeeping and peacebuilding, reaffirming the country’s longstanding commitment to promoting international peace, security and stability through the United Nations.
He underscored Bangladesh’s active participation in UN peacekeeping operations and its continued support for multilateral efforts to resolve conflicts and strengthen global peace.
DiCarlo praised Bangladesh’s constructive and responsible role within the United Nations and commended its sustained contributions to international peacekeeping, peacebuilding and global stability.
She also acknowledged Bangladesh’s longstanding commitment to promoting peace through multilateral cooperation and expressed appreciation for the country’s continued engagement in UN-led initiatives.
