Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has expressed his ambition to take Bangladesh-Japan relations to a new level, focusing on economic growth, investment, trade and broader bilateral cooperation.

Speaking at a joint press conference with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi in Tokyo on Tuesday, Tarique said Bangladesh wanted to transform its longstanding friendship with Japan into a powerful engine of economic growth, opportunity and shared prosperity.

He invited Japanese investors and businesses to explore investment opportunities in Bangladesh, highlighting the potential for stronger commercial partnerships between the two countries.

The two leaders held high-level bilateral talks at the Japanese Prime Minister’s Office, known as the Kantei, as part of Tarique’s four-day official visit to Japan from October 26 to 29.

The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral relations, expanding trade and investment, and enhancing cooperation in key areas of mutual interest.

Bangladesh is seeking greater Japanese investment in information and communication technology, renewable energy, advanced manufacturing and other priority sectors.

The government has also emphasised technology transfer, skills development and an improved business environment to attract foreign investors.

The visit comes after Bangladesh and Japan signed an Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) in February 2026, opening up new opportunities to expand bilateral trade and investment.

The two countries are also expected to broaden cooperation in infrastructure, energy, agriculture, human resource development and maritime security.

Dhaka hopes the visit will further strengthen the existing strategic partnership and open new avenues for economic cooperation and development.
