Survivors of devastating flash floods in Nepal are recounting heartbreaking stories of families being swept away before their eyes as rescue teams race to find those still missing.
The floods struck several areas of Nepal on Wednesday, with the Rasuwa district near the Tibet border among the worst affected.
Homes, roads, bridges and power infrastructure were swept away by torrents of water and debris.
“I watched helplessly as my entire family was swept away,” survivors said, describing scenes of panic and devastation as floodwaters surged through communities.
Nepalese authorities reported that at least 95 people had died, while hundreds remained missing.
The disaster has also left a large number of tourists and foreign nationals unaccounted for.
The flooding was reportedly triggered by a massive landslide in the Himalayan region, which sent mud, rocks and water into rivers, causing sudden and destructive flash floods.
Rescue operations are underway, but high water levels, damaged roads, power outages and difficult terrain are hampering efforts.
Helicopters and drones have been deployed to locate survivors and assess the extent of the destruction.
The disaster has left affected communities struggling to locate loved ones, while authorities continue evacuations and relief operations in the worst-hit areas.
