Bangladesh has announced an emergency grant of US$1 million (around Tk 12.3 crore) to support people affected by devastating landslides and flash floods in Nepal.
The assistance has been decided in view of the longstanding historical and friendly relations between Dhaka and Kathmandu.
The fund will be provided from a special allocation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the current fiscal year following instructions from Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. The proposal is currently awaiting final approval from the Ministry of Finance, according to officials.
The disaster, which struck the Nepal-Tibet border region, has claimed more than 1,100 lives, while thousands of people remain missing.
According to figures released by the relevant Nepalese authorities on Wednesday (September 2), 1,114 bodies have so far been recovered following the devastating flash floods.
Another 3,916 people remain missing in Nepal.
At least 16 people have also been reported dead on the Chinese side of the border, while 546 people remain missing there, including 261 foreign nationals.
The Bangladesh government’s emergency assistance is aimed at supporting relief and humanitarian efforts for those affected by the disaster.
