The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) on Wednesday approved 10 development projects involving Tk 9,333 crore and Tk 58 lakh.
Of the total, Tk 8,488 crore and Tk 71 lakh will come from government funds, while Tk 936 crore and Tk 38 lakh will be financed through project loans.
The approvals came at the ECNEC meeting held at the NEC Conference Room of the Planning Commission, with Prime Minister and ECNEC Chairperson Tarique Rahman in the chair.
Six of the projects are new, while four are revised.
The approved projects include the replacement and reconstruction of unusable facilities at Dhaka Medical College and the construction of 19 modern hostel buildings for students of 10 medical colleges.
The meeting also approved a project to develop smart bridge maintenance technology under the Roads and Highways Department.
Two water resources projects were approved to protect Lalmonirhat Sadar from erosion along the Dharla River and to strengthen coastal embankments in Sitakunda, Chattogram.
A rural road rehabilitation and strengthening project was also approved, along with a project to strengthen the capacity of the Department of Livestock Services.
In the power sector, ECNEC approved the construction of a 100MW solar power plant in Madarganj, Jamalpur, and a project to expand and strengthen electrical infrastructure in areas under the Dhaka Electric Supply Company (DESCO).
The committee also approved an infrastructure development project for Ramu Cantonment.
Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, and other ministers and senior government officials attended the meeting.
The planning minister also informed the ECNEC about nine projects costing less than Tk 50 crore that had already been approved.
The projects include initiatives on vaccine and biologics research, environmental sustainability, Sundarbans protection, power transmission and distribution, mosque library development, new media use in public services, and improvements in pre-primary and primary education in Cox’s Bazar and Bhasan Char.
