The state-run Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) plans to purchase commodities worth around Tk 8,000 crore in the current fiscal year to help stabilise the country’s essential commodity market amid global supply chain disruptions.

The main procurement items will include edible oil, lentils and sugar, along with additional commodities such as dates and chickpeas.

Initially, the TCB plans to source around 50 per cent of the commodities domestically and the remaining 50 per cent from international markets.

“If international sourcing proves more competitive and reliable, the corporation may increase its share of overseas procurement,” TCB Chairman Brigadier General Mohammad Foyshol Azad said in a recent interview with a news agency.

According to the Ministry of Commerce, the TCB has prepared a procurement plan for fiscal year 2026-27 to ensure an adequate supply of essential commodities.

The plan also includes measures to maintain sufficient stocks and ensure uninterrupted distribution of essential goods among consumers.

As part of its operational plan, the TCB is also working to strengthen its storage capacity.

The corporation currently operates 40 godowns, including nine owned by the TCB and 31 rented facilities.

The total storage capacity of these warehouses is around 48,370 metric tonnes, comprising 13,371 tonnes in TCB-owned facilities and 34,999 tonnes in rented facilities.
