Hilsa supply rises in Chandpur, prices stay high

The supply of hilsa has increased several times at Chandpur’s main fish landing centre over the past two weeks, but prices have remained high despite the peak fishing season.

A one-kilogram hilsa is currently selling for Tk2,900–3,000, according to traders.

They said the supply remains insufficient compared with demand, while hilsa from the southern regions is not reaching the Chandpur market, keeping prices elevated.

Although local fishermen are bringing in more fish from the Padma-Meghna rivers, the increased supply has yet to have a significant impact on retail prices.

Traders expect that prices may fall if supplies increase further, particularly with more fish arriving from other major hilsa-producing areas.
