Six state banks’ default loans hit Tk 1.48 lakh crore: Minister

Defaulted loans at six state-owned banks stood at Tk 1,47,776 crore as of June 30, 2026, Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury told Parliament on Sunday.

Janata Bank PLC accounted for the largest share, with defaulted loans of Tk 75,396.67 crore, according to figures placed before the House.

The finance minister disclosed the information in reply to a question from Bagerhat-4 MP Md Abdul Alim during the third session of the 13th Parliament. Deputy Speaker Barrister Kaiser Kamal presided over the session.

The six banks are Agrani Bank PLC, Bangladesh Development Bank PLC, BASIC Bank PLC, Janata Bank PLC, Rupali Bank PLC and Sonali Bank PLC.

According to the figures, Agrani Bank had Tk 29,029.67 crore in defaulted loans, while Rupali Bank had Tk 19,281.74 crore and Sonali Bank Tk 15,048.39 crore.

BASIC Bank had Tk 8,131.09 crore in defaulted loans, while Bangladesh Development Bank had Tk 888.79 crore.

The figures show that Janata Bank alone accounted for more than half of the total defaulted loans held by the six state-owned banks.
