Teachers and employees of MPO-listed educational institutions will also be covered by the country’s ninth national pay scale, with their salaries and allowances to be paid under the new structure effective from July 1, like government employees.
Jamil Shabnam, deputy secretary of the Implementation-1 Wing of the Finance Division, confirmed this on Tuesday.
“MPO-listed teachers and employees receive salaries and allowances under the national pay scale. They will also come under the ninth pay scale,” she said.
Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon also confirmed the matter in a Facebook post on Tuesday afternoon, saying MPO-listed teachers would receive salaries under the new pay structure.
The clarification came after confusion arose following Monday’s Cabinet approval of the new pay scale. Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Gani had earlier said it was not yet clear whether MPO-listed teachers and employees would be covered.
The government has decided to implement the ninth national pay scale in three phases from July 1 this year, with the full range of allowances to take effect from January 1, 2028.
The new pay scale, approved after 11 years, retains 20 grades. Basic salaries will increase by 100% to 142%, depending on the grade. The basic salary for the lowest, 20th grade, will rise from Tk8,250 to Tk20,000, while the top, first grade, will increase from Tk78,000 to Tk156,000.
More than 600,000 teachers and employees of MPO-listed schools, colleges, madrasas and technical institutions currently receive government financial support under the Monthly Pay Order (MPO) system.
Under the MPO policy, the term “pay scale” refers to the National Pay Scale 2015 and any subsequent national pay scales announced by the government. MPO-listed teachers and employees receive 100% of their basic salary according to the applicable scale, along with certain allowances.
The government last year decided to raise the house rent allowance for MPO-listed teachers and employees to 15% of their basic salary, up from the previous fixed allowance of Tk1,000 per month.
