Bangladesh has sought long-term cooperation from Saudi Arabia to ensure its energy security. Discussions were also held on establishing floating terminals for liquefied natural gas (LNG) and exploring gas reserves onshore and offshore, with Saudi Arabia expressing its willingness to provide support.

State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Anindya Islam Amit held the discussions on Sunday on the sidelines of the 17th International Energy Forum in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, during his visit to the country.

The Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources disclosed the information in a press release issued on Monday morning.

According to the release, separate discussions were also held on the possibility of LNG supplies from Qatar and investment in renewable energy with Saudi company ACWA Power.

The state minister held separate meetings with Saudi Assistant Minister of Energy for Electricity Nasser Al-Qahtani, Qatar’s Minister of State for Energy Affairs and QatarEnergy President and CEO Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, and ACWA Power CEO Tamer S. Saj.

During the meeting with the Saudi assistant minister, Bangladesh sought Riyadh’s support to strengthen the country’s energy security. Saudi Arabia expressed optimism about expanding its existing cooperation with Bangladesh in the energy sector.

The two sides also discussed establishing a framework for cooperation, including communication between representatives of the two countries, to identify areas of support for achieving Bangladesh’s energy-related targets for 2030.

Long-term energy cooperation, the establishment of floating LNG terminals, and onshore and offshore gas exploration were among the key issues discussed.

Discussions on LNG Supplies

During his meeting with Qatar’s Minister of State for Energy Affairs and QatarEnergy CEO Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, Amit discussed Bangladesh’s growing demand for natural gas and its existing LNG import arrangements.

The meeting focused on the possibility of securing LNG from QatarEnergy’s international supply network and diversifying import sources and transportation routes.

Both sides emphasised continuing commercial and technical discussions between the relevant organisations.

Bangladesh currently relies on both domestic natural gas and imported LNG. Securing long-term supplies and diversifying import sources are considered important to meeting the country’s gas demand and strengthening energy security.
