Health Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Hossain visited the home of a woman who died after allegedly undergoing treatment involving medical negligence and assured her family of an investigation into the incident.
The minister visited the home of Konika Mondal in Baghutia village of Baharpur Union in Baliakandi, Rajbari, on Friday (August 21). He spoke with her family members and heard their account of the incident.
The Health Ministry formed a five-member committee on Thursday night to investigate the allegation. The minister said strict action would be taken against those responsible if the allegations are substantiated.
Konika, wife of Ashanta Mondal, underwent a Caesarean section at Samrita Hospital in Faridpur on June 29. Her family alleged that a piece of gauze was left inside her abdomen and the incision was stitched up.
Her condition later deteriorated, and she was transferred to Ibn Sina Hospital in Dhaka, where she died on Wednesday night (August 19) after undergoing treatment for around one and a half months.
Konika’s husband alleged that the doctor, Laxmi Rani Dutta, left the gauze inside her abdomen during the surgery. Her son Partha Mondal called for action against those responsible and demanded that the hospital be shut down to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Local residents also expressed anger and demanded a fair investigation, punishment for those responsible and support for the bereaved family.
Health Minister Sakhawat Hossain said the five-member committee had been asked to submit its report within five working days. He reiterated that strict action would follow if the allegations were proven.
