The government will recruit 11,495 doctors to fill vacant posts at government hospitals as soon as possible, Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Hossain told Parliament on Monday.

He made the disclosure while answering a question from MP Md Mosharraf Hossain during the question-and-answer session of Parliament. Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikram was in the chair.

The minister said 30,311 doctors are currently working against 41,806 sanctioned posts in government hospitals across the country, leaving 11,495 posts vacant.

He said the government determines the need for doctors based on international and national health workforce standards. According to a government-funded study conducted in 2026, Bangladesh would need around 88,909 doctors this year to meet the World Health Organization’s minimum standard of 0.50 doctors per 1,000 people.

The minister clarified that the total number of doctors in the country is not the same as the number working in the government healthcare system.

He said the government has already undertaken various recruitment initiatives to fill vacant positions in public healthcare facilities and increase the number of doctors according to public demand.

A significant number of doctors have already been recruited through the 44th and 48th special Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) examinations, he said. Recruitment of assistant surgeons through the 45th, 46th, 47th and 50th BCS examinations is also underway.

The government will continue filling vacant posts in phases and creating new positions where necessary to ensure accessible, quality and people-friendly healthcare services for the public, the minister added.
