Bangladesh’s measles death toll continued to climb on Tuesday as four more children died with symptoms consistent with the disease over the previous 24 hours, pushing the combined number of confirmed and suspected fatalities to 797.
According to the latest data released by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), the four latest deaths have been classified as suspected measles fatalities, pending laboratory confirmation.
With the latest update, the number of suspected measles deaths has risen to 702, while laboratory-confirmed deaths remain unchanged at 95.
The country also recorded 878 new suspected measles cases during the reporting period, taking the cumulative number of suspected infections nationwide to 119,448.
Meanwhile, 130 new laboratory-confirmed cases were reported, raising the total number of confirmed measles infections to 14,708, according to the DGHS.
The outbreak has placed growing pressure on the country’s healthcare system, with hospitals continuing to receive large numbers of patients, particularly children.
Since March 15, a total of 102,244 patients with suspected measles have been admitted to hospitals across Bangladesh. Of them, 98,411 have recovered and been discharged, DGHS data showed.
Health authorities have repeatedly urged parents to ensure children receive routine measles vaccinations, warning that immunisation remains the most effective protection against the highly contagious viral disease.
The government has also intensified surveillance, treatment and vaccination efforts in affected areas to contain the outbreak and prevent further loss of life.
