Rangpur Metropolitan Police (RPMP) Commissioner Mahbubur Rashid has said police are working to uncover the actual motive behind the killing of four members of a family and bring those responsible to justice.
He made the remarks while visiting the crime scene in Machuapara of Rangpur city on Friday (August 28).
The newly appointed commissioner said the case is important and the investigation is progressing. He said investigators would analyse available evidence and information professionally and take necessary legal action.
Regarding allegations by the family of accused Siddhartha Das that the roof of teacher Ganapati Chakraborty’s house was washed with water, potentially destroying evidence, Rashid said he had also heard the allegation but had joined Rangpur only the previous day. He said the crime scene had been preserved and the relevant evidence collected.
“There is no scope for any negligence in such an incident,” the commissioner said, adding that police were using necessary technological and intelligence support in the investigation.
He also described drug abuse as a major social problem across the country and said he expected to see improvements in Rangpur within a week following discussions with his officers.
The killings of four members of the same family have sparked widespread concern in Rangpur.
On Saturday night (August 22), Puja Chakraborty called her sister Pritilata Chakraborty but found her phone switched off. She then tried calling Pritilata’s husband, daughter and son, but their phones were also unreachable. After receiving no response at the family’s home in Kamal Kachna Machuapara, she informed police.
Police later recovered the bodies of retired teacher Ganapati Chakraborty Jewel, 65, his wife Pritilata Chakraborty Bhola, 50, their postgraduate student daughter Agami Chakraborty Prarthi, 25, and their fifth-grade son Ayush Chakraborty Priyam, 12.
Two young men, Mugdha Das, 23, and Siddhartha Das, 19, were detained from the same area early Sunday. They were later sent to jail after reportedly giving confessional statements before a court under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
A murder case was filed against unidentified accused by Gopinath Chakraborty, elder brother of the victims, at Kotwali Police Station.
The investigation has since been transferred from Kotwali Police Station to the Detective Branch (DB). DB Officer-in-Charge Zinat Ali has been appointed as the new investigation officer.
