A Dhaka court has granted four days’ remand for Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam and one day for his first wife, Maksuda Islam, in a case filed over the alleged abetment of his second wife Mariam Khatun’s suicide.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam passed the order on Monday after hearing a police remand petition.
Mariam’s hanging body was recovered from Flat 203 on the third floor of Building 5 of NAM Bhaban in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar on Sunday evening. Police subsequently took Gazi Nazrul and Maksuda into custody for questioning.
Mariam’s father, SM Masum Billah, later filed a case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station accusing Gazi Nazrul, Maksuda and Mariam’s maternal uncle, Md Obaidur Rahman, of abetting her suicide.
Police had initially sought seven days’ remand for Gazi Nazrul and Maksuda for questioning in the case.
