A man has been arrested for allegedly hanging a garland made of shoes around the under-construction sculpture of Bir Sreshtho Hamidur Rahman in Jhenaidah.
The incident took place at the central bus terminal area of Jhenaidah town on Tuesday.
Photos showing the shoe garland hanging from the head of the sculpture spread on social media, triggering widespread outrage among local residents and freedom fighters.
Police arrested Abdus Rahman alias Samrat from the Kanchannagar area of the town at around 8:30pm on Tuesday, based on information from CCTV footage, according to Additional Superintendent of Police Sheikh Billal Hossain. Legal proceedings are underway.
The shoe garland was later removed from the sculpture by members of the local freedom fighters’ organisation.
An emergency meeting was held at the district administration office following the incident. District administration officials condemned the act and formed an investigation committee to determine those responsible and whether anyone else was involved.
The sculpture had reportedly been vandalised several months earlier.
Authorities have pledged to take legal action against those responsible.
