Police recovered the bodies of a 23-year-old woman and her two young children from their bedroom in Chirirbandar upazila of Dinajpur on Sunday evening.
The bodies were recovered around 7pm from Mostafapur Balup Para village under Amarpur Union. The deceased were identified as Swarna Akter, wife of Shakil, and their four-year-old son Safayet Hossain and one-year-old daughter Raisa Akter.
According to local residents, Swarna entered the bedroom with her children on Sunday afternoon and locked the door from inside following a reported family dispute. They alleged that she strangled the children before dying by suicide by hanging herself with a scarf.
After hearing family members shouting, locals rushed to the house and informed the police.
A message reading, “From today, this story ends,” was found written on the bedroom wall, raising questions about the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
The deceased woman’s relatives alleged that Swarna and her children had been murdered in a planned attack and demanded a fair and impartial investigation.
Officer-in-Charge of Chirirbandar Police Station Mahmudun Nabi said police recovered the three bodies.
However, when officers arrived, the body that had reportedly been found hanging had already been brought down and placed on the floor, creating uncertainty about the circumstances, he said.
Officials from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Detective Branch (DB) and senior police officers visited the scene and are jointly investigating the incident, he added.
Dinajpur Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Anwar Hossain said autopsies would be conducted and an investigation had begun to establish the cause of the deaths.
Legal proceedings were underway, he added.
