Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and his Japanese counterpart, Sanae Takaichi, began high-level bilateral talks at the Japanese Prime Minister’s Office in Tokyo on Tuesday to strengthen bilateral relations and expand trade, investment and economic cooperation.

The summit began at the Kantei, Japan’s Prime Minister’s Office, following a ceremonial reception for Tarique Rahman.

Takaichi welcomed the Bangladesh prime minister upon his arrival, and a contingent of the Japanese armed forces accorded him a guard of honour as the national anthems of both countries were played.

Tarique inspected the guard of honour before introducing members of his delegation to Takaichi.

The Japanese prime minister subsequently introduced members of her cabinet to the Bangladesh leader.

The discussions are expected to focus on expanding bilateral trade and investment, strengthening commercial ties, increasing Japanese cooperation in key sectors and exchanging views on regional and international issues.

The two countries are also seeking to advance cooperation in renewable energy, agriculture, science and technology, skills development and human resource development, alongside the implementation of the Bangladesh-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement.

During his four-day visit, Tarique is scheduled to address the Japan-Bangladesh Economic Forum and meet Japanese business leaders to explore further investment opportunities in Bangladesh.
