World Animal Day is being observed today, October 4, across the globe to raise awareness about animal rights, welfare and the need for humane treatment of animals.
The day highlights the vital role animals play in maintaining the balance of nature and promotes kindness towards pets, wildlife and animals that benefit humans.
World Animal Day was first celebrated by German writer Heinrich Zimmermann on March 24, 1925, at the Berlin Sports Palace. It was later observed on October 4 from 1929.
In 1931, October 4 was officially recognised as World Animal Day at an international animal protection congress held in Florence, Italy.
The day is observed worldwide by various animal welfare organisations, including the UK-based Naturewatch Foundation.
