BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has called for building strong and independent state institutions to ensure the sustainability of democracy in Bangladesh.
Speaking at a discussion marking the first anniversary of the July mass uprising on Sunday, Fakhrul said the country now has a historic opportunity to establish a truly democratic state after years of authoritarian rule.
He stressed that democracy cannot survive through elections alone, but requires effective institutions capable of ensuring accountability, justice, and the rule of law.
Fakhrul said political parties must work together to build institutions that remain functional regardless of which party is in power.
He warned against allowing any individual or political group to dominate state institutions, saying such practices ultimately weaken democracy and public confidence.
He also urged all democratic forces to remain united to protect the gains achieved through the mass movement and to prevent any return to authoritarianism.
According to him, strengthening constitutional bodies and ensuring institutional independence are essential for establishing a stable democratic order in the country.
