Dhaka: A group of aggrieved lawyers staged a protest at the Bangladesh Supreme Court on Sunday, opposing the appointment of newly recruited law officers to represent the state in court.
The demonstration took place in front of the Office of the Attorney General within the Supreme Court premises.
The protesting lawyers alleged that many qualified legal professionals who had actively participated in past political movements and endured imprisonment and persecution were excluded from the appointments. Instead, they claimed, individuals who allegedly secured positions through financial influence and other undisclosed advantages were appointed as Deputy Attorneys General and Assistant Attorneys General.
The demonstrators called for greater transparency in the recruitment process, arguing that appointments to such important state legal positions should be based on merit, professional competence, and demonstrated commitment rather than favoritism.
During the protest, the lawyers chanted slogans demanding the cancellation of the recent appointments and the recruitment of qualified lawyers who had been actively involved in democratic movements and struggles.
On July 30, the Solicitor Wing of the Law and Justice Division under the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs issued two separate notifications cancelling the appointments of all previous Deputy Attorneys General and Assistant Attorneys General. The ministry subsequently appointed 86 new Deputy Attorneys General and 179 new Assistant Attorneys General.
