The Department of Environment (DoE) has intensified its efforts to curb pollution in the Buriganga River by collecting liquid waste samples from multiple discharge points, aiming to safeguard the environment and public health.
As part of the ongoing drive, the DoE’s Narayanganj District Office—under the Dhaka Regional Office—conducted inspections for the second consecutive day in the industrial zones of Siddhirganj and Fatullah, targeting factories suspected of releasing untreated waste into the river.
Officials inspected several establishments, including Neat Concern Limited, Ibrahim Textile, Amzad Dyeing, Rider Thread and Accessories Limited, and Friends Dyeing and Finishing Industries.
At Friends Dyeing and Finishing Industries in Fatullah’s WAPDA Pool area, inspectors found the factory operating without environmental clearance and lacking an Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP). Wastewater samples were collected from a bypass drain in the presence of factory representatives and sent to the DoE laboratory in Dhaka for analysis.
Authorities warned that legal action would be taken under environmental laws if the tests confirm pollution.
On the same day, a joint enforcement drive involving multiple DoE units identified additional waste discharge points along the Buriganga and collected further samples for testing.
According to the DoE, between January 2025 and July 2026, fines totaling Tk 2.92 crore were imposed on 103 industrial units for excessive waste discharge into the Buriganga and its canals, with Tk 96.60 lakh already recovered. Power connections to nine factories operating without ETPs were also disconnected.
The DoE reaffirmed its commitment to continuing regular inspections and enforcement measures to reduce river pollution, protect ecosystems, and maintain navigability of waterways around Dhaka in line with government directives.
