US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T. Christensen has reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to strengthening people-to-people ties with Dhaka by sharing America’s history, culture and values with the Bangladeshi people.
“Two hundred and fifty years ago, our 56 Founding Fathers risked everything for independence and self-governance,” Christensen told reporters on Saturday. “We believe America’s history has inspired people around the world, including the people of Bangladesh and the country’s own struggle for independence.”
The ambassador was speaking at the American Fair, organised by the US Embassy at Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed Park in Gulshan, Dhaka, to commemorate the 250th anniversary of US independence.
“We want to share more of our history and further strengthen the people-to-people ties and mutual understanding between our two countries,” he said.
Asked how he viewed the relationship between the peoples of the United States and Bangladesh, Christensen said Washington hopes to introduce its history, ideals and values to Bangladesh while also learning more about the country’s people and culture.
To that end, he highlighted the ongoing America Week celebrations across Bangladesh. The programme has already been held in Chattogram and, after the Dhaka events, will continue in Rajshahi and Sylhet.
Christensen said the nationwide initiative is intended to expand engagement with people across Bangladesh and foster greater mutual understanding between the two nations.
“Our goal is to better understand Bangladesh while creating more opportunities for Bangladeshis to learn about the United States,” he said.
