Students across Bangladesh will be allowed to visit museums free of charge once a week under a new government initiative, including the July Uprising Memorial Museum.
Prime Minister’s Information and Broadcasting Adviser Zahed Ur Rahman announced the plan on Tuesday while answering questions at a press conference on the progress of government activities at the Press Information Department conference room at the Secretariat.
He said the government had taken a decision in principle to designate one day each week for students to visit the July Uprising Memorial Museum free of charge. Students from higher classes will initially be eligible for the facility.
Asked whether students would need tickets, Zahed said admission would be completely free.
The initiative will not be limited to students of government schools. Students from all schools will gradually be brought under the programme, he said.
“It is not just this museum. Arrangements are also being made under government management to bring school students to our National Museum and show them around,” the adviser said.
Similar arrangements will gradually be introduced at other museums in Dhaka and across the country, he added.
The initiative is aimed at encouraging students to visit museums and gain a better understanding of the country’s history, heritage and recent events.
