The Army Chief has returned home after concluding his visit to South Sudan.
During the visit, the Army Chief directed Bangladeshi peacekeepers deployed in both mission areas to perform their duties with the highest level of vigilance, professionalism, discipline and dedication. He also interacted with Bangladeshi staff officers, observers and contingent members serving under the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) and the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA), and was briefed on their activities and the overall situation in the missions.
As part of the visit, the Army Chief separately met and exchanged views with Major General Junhwi Woo, Force Commander of UNMISS, and Lieutenant General Ganesh Kumar Shrestha, Force Commander of UNISFA. In Abyei, he also met with the Mission Leadership Team and national monitors from Sudan and South Sudan. Discussions focused on the missions’ overall activities, security situation and operational challenges.
Later, the Army Chief paid courtesy calls on South Sudan’s Defence Minister Chol Thon Balok and Chief of Defence Forces General Santino Deng Wol. During the visit, he was accorded a guard of honour by the South Sudan Defence Forces.
The visit is expected to boost the morale of Bangladeshi peacekeepers, further strengthen Bangladesh’s relations and cooperation with the countries concerned and the United Nations, and contribute to expanding Bangladesh’s role in international peacekeeping operations.
