Kushtia-3 MP Amir Hamza has accused “identified criminals” linked to the Gono Odhikar Parishad of carrying out a planned attack on him, alleging that the incident was intended to destabilise the district.
Speaking at a press conference at the district Jamaat office in Kushtia city on Sunday, Hamza gave the authorities 24 hours to arrest those responsible.
He claimed the attack was premeditated and called on the administration to arrest those directly and indirectly involved within the deadline. He also demanded legal action against the alleged masterminds based on CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts, and urged local police and administrators to adopt a “zero-tolerance” policy against those responsible without political pressure.
“Everything in this district’s administration has failed. We have no hope of receiving security from those responsible,” Hamza told reporters.
A case has been filed over the attack on his vehicle. His personal assistant, Momin Biswas, submitted a written complaint to the officer-in-charge of Kushtia Model Police Station at around 11:15am on Sunday.
The complaint names 23 people and lists another 40 to 50 unidentified individuals as accused. Police said the case was being processed.
Hamza also said his driver had carried a stick when the attack occurred. Responding to a question about why sticks were kept in his vehicle, he said he normally kept two for personal security because he had not yet been provided with a government bodyguard and did not have a licensed firearm.
“I drove the car myself and left the scene,” he said.
Hamza also announced that his party would hold a protest rally in Kushtia city on Sunday afternoon.
