An executive magistrate has been appointed to oversee the exhumation of the remains of celebrated Bangladeshi film actor Salman Shah from his grave in Sylhet as part of the ongoing investigation into his death.
Sylhet Additional District Magistrate Pinki Saha issued an office order on June 22 appointing Assistant Commissioner and Executive Magistrate Md Parvez to perform magisterial duties during the exhumation, in compliance with an order of the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court issued on May 24. A copy of the office order was forwarded to the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court on Sunday.
According to the order, the exhumation will be carried out under Section 176(2) of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898, in connection with Ramna Model Police Station Case No. 18 (10)25, filed under Sections 302 and 34 of the Penal Code, to determine the exact cause of Salman Shah’s death.
Sub-Inspector Shah Alam of the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s General Registration Wing for Ramna Police Station confirmed the development.
Earlier, the investigation officer, CID Inspector Ziaul Morshed, sought the court’s permission to exhume the actor’s remains, prepare an inquest report and conduct a fresh autopsy in the presence of an executive magistrate to establish the actual cause of death. On May 24, 2026, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jewel Rana granted the application, allowing the exhumation.
However, on June 23, the same court accepted a petition seeking cancellation of its earlier order after Salman Shah’s maternal uncle, Mohammad Alamgir, popularly known as Kumkum, challenged the decision.
The legal proceedings stem from a murder case filed on October 21, 2025, by Alamgir with Ramna Police Station against 11 people, including the actor’s wife, Samira Haque.
The other accused are businessman Aziz Mohammad Bhai, Samira’s mother Latifa Haque Lusi, actor Dawn, David, Zaved, Faruk, Ruby, A Sattar, Saju and Rijvi Ahmed Farhad.
A day earlier, on October 20, 2025, Dhaka’s Sixth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Jannatul Ferdous Ibn Haque ordered Ramna Police Station to treat the case as a murder investigation and submit a report.
The court also ruled that the earlier unnatural death (UD) case had been cancelled and revoked through an order issued on October 31, 2021.
Salman Shah, whose real name was Chowdhury Mohammad Shahriar Emon, died on September 6, 1996, at the age of 25. One of the most popular actors of the 1990s, his death has remained one of the country’s most debated and controversial cases for nearly three decades, with repeated calls from his family and supporters for a fresh investigation.
