Members of India’s Border Security Force (BSF) allegedly entered Bangladesh territory and attempted to abduct a young Bangladeshi man in Lalmonirhat’s Hatibandha border area on Tuesday.
The BSF personnel reportedly fled after facing strong resistance from local residents, leaving behind two shotguns and a walkie-talkie. Villagers later recovered the items and handed them over to the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
The incident took place near Border Pillar 907/4-S in the Bonchowki-Amjhol area of Gotamari Union around noon, said Lieutenant Colonel Mehedi Imam, commander of Lalmonirhat-15 BGB Battalion.
The alleged victim, Liton Mia, 28, said his father was working in a field when his mother brought him food. When BSF members approached, Liton asked his mother to move away.
“Two BSF personnel entered our side of the border, beat me and tried to take me away. I screamed for help, and people from nearby paddy fields and villages rushed to the scene. They confronted the BSF personnel, and a fierce scuffle broke out,” Liton said.
He said the BSF members eventually retreated across the border under pressure from the villagers, leaving their two shotguns and a walkie-talkie behind.
The villagers later handed the weapons and communication device to the BGB’s Bonchowki camp.
Lieutenant Colonel Mehedi Imam said a flag meeting between the BGB and BSF battalion commanders was held in the evening following the incident.
“During the meeting, the recovered weapons and walkie-talkie were formally handed back to the BSF,” he said.
He added that tensions had prevailed in the Bonchowki-Amjhol border area following the incident, but the situation returned to normal after the flag meeting.
BGB surveillance and patrols have been intensified along the border, he said.
