Four people were killed and one was injured after a bus overturned onto an e-rickshaw in Lahirikanda area of Jamalpur on Monday evening.
The accident occurred around 7:30pm near the Lahirikanda Eidgah ground on the Jamalpur-Mymensingh highway.
The deceased were identified as Md Jalal Uddin, 60, son of the late Yunus Ali of Baitkamari; Md Mokbul Hossain, 65, son of the late Atahar Ali of Tulsipur Segua; and Saddam Hossain, 40, son of Faridul Islam of Baitkamari. The identity of the fourth victim, believed to be around 28, has not yet been established.
According to Nazmus Sakib, officer-in-charge of Jamalpur Police Station, a Rajib Paribahan bus travelling from Jamalpur to Dhaka was about to collide with an oncoming e-rickshaw when the driver lost control. The bus overturned and landed on the e-rickshaw.
Fire Service personnel rushed to the scene and recovered three bodies initially. The injured were taken to hospital, where a doctor declared another victim dead.
The crash brought traffic on the Jamalpur-Mymensingh highway to a standstill, causing a long tailback on both sides of the road. Traffic resumed around 10pm after a wrecker removed the overturned bus.
Police said legal action over the accident is underway.
