The government has cancelled the remaining contractual tenures of the managing directors (MDs) and chief executive officers (CEOs) of three state-owned banks.
Separate notifications issued by the Financial Institutions Division of the Ministry of Finance directed the cancellation of the appointments of the MDs and CEOs of Agrani Bank PLC, BASIC Bank PLC and Bangladesh Development Bank PLC (BDBL).
The officials are Md Anwarul Islam, MD and CEO of Agrani Bank; Md Kamruzzaman Khan, MD and CEO of BASIC Bank; and Md Jasim Uddin, MD and CEO of BDBL.
The notifications were issued on Wednesday, September 2, and signed by Afroz Akter Riba, deputy secretary of the Financial Institutions Division.
According to the notifications, the government has recommended and consented to cancelling the remaining periods of the contractual appointments made under agreements between the respective banks’ boards of directors and the three executives.
The concerned authorities have been instructed to take the necessary further regulatory steps in accordance with the Bank Company Act and the contractual agreements signed with the boards of directors.
Anwarul Islam assumed office as Agrani Bank’s MD and CEO on November 3, 2024. He had been appointed to the bank’s top executive position for three years through a notification issued by the Financial Institutions Division on October 21, 2024.
He began his banking career as a senior officer at Agrani Bank in 1988. During his long career, he served as general manager of the bank’s Dhaka, Khulna and Faridpur circles. He also served as head of the Jessore and Jhenaidah regions and managed several branches.
He was promoted to deputy managing director of Agrani Bank on November 1, 2021, before being appointed MD and CEO in 2024. His contractual tenure, however, has been cut short by the government’s decision.
The government recently made major changes to Agrani Bank’s board of directors, withdrawing several directors and appointing new ones. The cancellation of the MD’s contractual appointment comes as part of the latest changes at the bank.
Meanwhile, the government also cancelled the remaining contractual tenure of Md Kamruzzaman Khan as MD and CEO of BASIC Bank.
The contractual appointment of Md Jasim Uddin, MD and CEO of state-owned BDBL, was also cancelled under the same decision.
Jasim Uddin joined BDBL as MD and CEO on November 20, 2024. Previously, he served as deputy managing director of Janata Bank and Karmasangsthan Bank.
He began his banking career as a senior officer at Janata Bank in 1988 and held several important positions during his long career before being appointed head of BDBL.
