Authorities in India’s Uttarakhand state have sealed 17 unrecognised madrasas, while three others have voluntarily discontinued operations, bringing the total number of institutions shut down to 20.
The latest action was carried out in Dehradun and Haldwani against institutions operating without the required recognition and academic standards.
In Dehradun, Madrasa Jamia-Tus-Salam Al-Islamia in Azad Colony was sealed.
The managements of Madrasa Dar-e-Arqam and Madrasa Darul Uloom Rahimia submitted written undertakings confirming that they had stopped operations.
In Haldwani, two more unrecognised madrasas were sealed after their managements failed to produce the required recognition documents.
Uttarakhand officials said the campaign would continue against institutions that fail to comply with prescribed rules and educational standards. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said no educational institution would be allowed to operate without meeting the required recognition and regulatory standards.
The action comes after Uttarakhand replaced its statutory Madrasa Board with a new authority for regulating minority educational institutions.
