The government has decided to stop using the honorific terms “His Excellency” and “Honourable” before the titles of the President, Prime Minister and ministers in official communications, documents and summaries.

The decision was announced in a circular issued by the General Administration Division of the Cabinet Division on Wednesday (September 9).

The circular, signed by Cabinet Division Deputy Secretary Tania Afroz, said the honorific terms “His Excellency”, “Honourable” or any other such designation should no longer be used in written official communications, documents and summaries when referring to the President, Prime Minister, ministers, state ministers and deputy ministers.

All ministries, divisions and their subordinate offices have been instructed to follow the directive in their official communications and documentation.

The circular described the matter as “very important” and said the decision would take effect immediately.

Copies of the directive have already been sent to the Prime Minister’s Principal Secretary, all senior secretaries and secretaries, divisional commissioners, deputy commissioners, upazila nirbahi officers (UNOs), the chief information officer and other relevant administrative offices and officials for implementation.
