The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) says it has solved within three days the killings of a couple and their five-month-old fetus whose decomposed remains were recovered from a locked room in Ashulia.
Moniruzzaman alias Hridoy, 44, was arrested on September 8 over the deaths of Alamgir Kabir, 45, and his wife, Nazma Khatun, 39.
According to PBI, Hridoy had previously been in a relationship with Nazma, and a dispute over the relationship led to the killings. Investigators recovered Nazma’s mobile phone, SIM card, office ID and handbag from him.
PBI Dhaka District Superintendent MN Morshed disclosed the details at a press briefing on Wednesday. He said Hridoy later gave a confessional statement before a court under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
On September 5, police recovered the partially decomposed bodies from a locked room at Hazrat Ali’s house in Jamgora after residents reported a foul smell. Nazma’s sister, Shapla Begum, filed a murder case against unidentified people on September 6.
PBI took over the investigation on September 8 and arrested Hridoy from Narsinghpur in Ashulia the same day.
According to investigators, Alamgir had learned about Nazma’s previous relationship with Hridoy. On the day of the incident, the couple allegedly took Hridoy to their home, where a heated argument broke out.
PBI said Alamgir allegedly assaulted Hridoy, while Nazma struck him with a broom. Hridoy allegedly retaliated and kicked Nazma in the abdomen, causing her and the fetus to die. During a subsequent struggle, he allegedly strangled Alamgir with a towel.
Hridoy then allegedly placed the bodies on the bed and fled with Nazma’s belongings.
The PBI also said Hridoy had previously been accused in a 2022 murder case involving an unidentified woman whose body was recovered near Gonoshasthaya Hospital in Ashulia. Investigators are examining whether anyone else was involved in the latest killings.
