Former AL MP Azizul Haque Arzu arrested

Former Awami League leader and ex-member of parliament Khandaker Mohammad Azizul Haque Arzu has been arrested after members of the Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) detained him and handed him over to police.

The incident took place around 10:30pm on Monday (September 14) in front of Meena Bazar in Lalmatia, Dhaka. Mohammadpur police later formally arrested him.

Arzu, 69, is a former MP from the Pabna-2 constituency. He was elected to parliament from the constituency as an Awami League candidate in the 2014 national election. His home is in Natia Bari area of Aminpur in Pabna.

Police said local JCD leaders and activists detained Arzu in front of Meena Bazar in Lalmatia on Monday night and later handed him over to police. He sustained minor injuries during a scuffle at the time of his detention.

Mohammadpur police said Arzu has a heart condition. Following his arrest, considering his physical condition, police escorted him to a doctor along with his family members for medical treatment.

Jewel Rana, additional deputy commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Tejgaon division, said Arzu was detained with the assistance of local JCD leaders and activists and was subsequently shown arrested. He faces several cases, and further legal action will be taken after the cases are reviewed and investigated.
