German tourist Kirill Lander-Weber returned to Dhaka on Thursday without recovering his stolen belongings, including a MacBook laptop and DSLR camera, after police failed to locate them despite extensive efforts.

The 18-year-old tourist left Rajshahi Railway Station for Dhaka on the Padma Express at around 4pm on Thursday.

Police said they had tracked the laptop’s location several times but could not recover either the laptop or the camera.

At around 7:40am, the laptop’s location was detected near Abdulpur Railway Station in Natore. Police subsequently searched two trains—Titumir Express and Bonolota Express—that were expected to be there, but found no trace of the stolen items.

Multiple law enforcement units, including Rajshahi Metropolitan Police, Detective Branch, Rapid Action Battalion, Tourist Police and Railway Police, have been working to recover the belongings.

CCTV footage also helped police obtain an image of a suspected person, which has been circulated to aid identification.

Lander-Weber had arrived in Bangladesh for the first time to visit historical and cultural sites. On Wednesday, he got off at Natore Railway Station after travelling from Santahar.

He was reportedly introduced to a man who claimed to be a railway official. Trusting him, the tourist left his belongings with the man while he went to an ATM to withdraw money to buy a ticket.

When he returned, the man and his bag were gone.

The bag contained his MacBook, DSLR camera and other important personal belongings. He later filed a general diary with Natore Sadar Police Station.

Police initially traced the laptop to Rajshahi and later to areas around a local college.

However, its exact location could not be determined because it had no SIM card. Police also alerted local traders over fears that the laptop could be sold.

Rajshahi Railway Police OC Hafizur Rahman said efforts to recover the belongings were continuing, describing the foreign tourist as a guest of Bangladesh.
