Two construction workers were killed and four others injured when the shuttering of a roof collapsed at an under-construction municipal building in Pirganj upazila of Rangpur on Tuesday afternoon.
The accident occurred around 5pm in the Araji Gangarampur area while workers were engaged in casting the roof of the building. Two of the injured workers are in critical condition and have been referred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
The deceased were identified as Asadul Haque, a resident of Sadullapur upazila in Gaibandha, and Shihab Hossain of Rangpur. Their detailed identities were not immediately available.
According to local sources, 13 workers had been working on the roof casting since the morning when the shuttering suddenly gave way, trapping several workers beneath the collapsed structure.
A team from the Pirganj Fire Service Station rushed to the scene and began rescue operations, with local residents joining the effort.
Nazmul Sarkar, an official of the Pirganj Fire Service Station, said two workers were rescued in critical condition and taken to the upazila health complex. Local residents rescued several others and took them to hospital.
Pirganj Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Masud Rana confirmed that the two workers had died before reaching the hospital. Of the four injured, two were referred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, while the other two are receiving treatment at the upazila health complex.
Abdullah Al Bakiul Bari, administrator of Pirganj Municipality and upazila nirbahi officer, told media that a probe committee had reportedly been formed on the district administration’s instructions to investigate the accident, although he had yet to receive the official letter.
He said legal action would be taken if the investigation found evidence of negligence.
