Govt to review cases against former President

Bangladesh’s Law Minister Asaduzzaman has said that all cases filed against the recently departed president will be carefully reviewed to determine their validity and intent.

Speaking on Saturday at a seminar on human rights and justice for victims at the CIRDAP Auditorium, the minister noted that authorities will examine whether the cases are politically motivated.

He also addressed the upcoming presidential election, stating that there is no need to convene a special parliamentary session, as the election must be held by October 24. “Time will determine who becomes the next president,” he added.

The minister further revealed that 133 ordinances, including one focused on preventing enforced disappearances, are expected to be placed before the next cabinet meeting for final decisions.

Additionally, he said the government is working to withdraw politically motivated cases filed between 2009 and 2024.

However, he emphasized that cases involving serious crimes such as rape will not be withdrawn, even if they are deemed political.
