Maldives President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has warmly welcomed Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman, who is visiting the Maldives as the special guest of the Maldivian government for the country’s 61st Independence Day celebrations.
The Maldivian president received Dr Khalilur at the President’s Office on Saturday evening during a courtesy call by the Bangladeshi foreign minister.
The discussions focused on ways to further strengthen bilateral relations, with particular emphasis on multilateral cooperation, educational opportunities and people-to-people exchanges.
Both sides highlighted the longstanding friendship and close relations between Bangladesh and the Maldives and reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation in areas of mutual interest for the benefit of both countries.
President Muizzu later hosted an evening tea in honour of Dr Khalilur.
The Maldives celebrated its 61st Independence Day on July 26, marking the country’s independence from British rule in 1965.
High-profile international guests, including Saudi Royal Prince Dr Mansour bin Mutaib bin Abdulaziz Al Saud as the guest of honour, joined the national celebrations.
Dr Khalilur arrived in the Maldives via Doha from Manila, the Philippines, a senior official said.
This is Dr Khalilur’s first official visit to the Maldives since he assumed office as Bangladesh’s foreign minister on February 17, 2026.
The visit has been described as a significant milestone in further strengthening the longstanding and cordial relations between Bangladesh and the Maldives.
“The visit sets the stage for enhanced cooperation in the years ahead,” the Maldivian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
During the visit, Dr Khalilur is scheduled to hold talks with Maldivian Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam.
The discussions are expected to cover the broad spectrum of bilateral cooperation, new opportunities for collaboration and ways to further strengthen the partnership between the two countries.
The two ministers will also exchange views on regional and international developments and reaffirm their commitment to continued cooperation in regional and multilateral forums.
