Freedom fighter and artist Saeeda Kamal Tulu died at a private hospital in Dhaka at around 7:30am on Sunday. She was 74.

Saeeda Kamal was the youngest daughter of renowned poet Sufia Kamal and the younger sister of human rights activist Sultana Kamal. She leaves behind a daughter.

Sultana Kamal said her sister had been suffering from various age-related health complications for a long time. Her condition deteriorated recently, prompting her admission to a private hospital in the capital, where she was treated in the intensive care unit (ICU).

According to Sultana Kamal, Saeeda’s funeral prayers will be held on Tuesday, followed by her burial at Azimpur Graveyard.

Her daughter, who lives in London, is expected to return to Bangladesh before the final rites. Until then, her body will be kept in the mortuary at BIRDEM Hospital, Sultana Kamal told bdnews24.com.

Earlier this year, on July 4, Saeeda’s elder brother, journalist and teacher Shahed Kamal, died.

Saeeda Kamal made significant contributions to the development of fine arts in Bangladesh through her creative work. After completing higher studies at the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Dhaka, she received specialised training in design at Kala Bhavana, Visva-Bharati University, in Santiniketan, India.

She held several solo and group exhibitions at home and abroad.

During the 1971 Liberation War, Saeeda served as a nurse at the Bangladesh Field Hospital on the battlefield alongside her elder sister, Sultana Kamal.
